Week 11-5 Commuications & Gender Appropriate Behavior

The views of gender appropriate differ from culture to culture and are a very important consideration in communicating global work/project teams. In US men greeting women by shaking hands is considered normal and is a common occurrence. But some women in India and Middle Eastern countries due to religious customs and culture do not make physical contact with males. It is important to be aware of these customs and should women to come forward approach to shake hand before other proceed to do so. Comments which are acceptable in one culture may not be acceptable in others and when conversing with people from other cultures we can try to restrain from making personal comments and is better to keep conversations restricted to business needs until we understand the cultures and customs.

Thanks for this helpful tip. I am aware that there are often many differences in culture, and I think it is interesting that women are not supposed to make eye contact with men in middle Eastern countries, such as India. I never knew that this was a big deal, but it is good to know especially considering the fact that companies in India and the U.S. do a lot of business together. I will keep this in mind in the future if I ever conduct business in India or other middle eastern countries because I would not want to unnecessarily offend anyone.

Very informative topic. I would like to add here that its not only women who dont shake hands with men, men also cant shake hands with women because of the religious reasons. Because of same reason I have to go through a lot of mental tension when going to a new place, interview or gathering where I suspect women to be present. Now keeping in mind that its not trivial, and religiously its better for us if a nail passes through our head than we touch a woman out of our family (wife, daughter, sister etc). Now what can one do in such a situation? Most of the time I am trying to hide from the places where I see women. Else I sometime retrieve my hand telling that I have cold etc. So yes its very important to know that there are different people who carry different values in the society that we should respect and not make things hard for them.
